'Weekend Warrior' is a term used to describe a member of the Defence Force Reserves because they usually only 'play soldiers' on the weekends: Joe is a weekend warrior.

Contributor's comments: I'd always understood "weekend warrior" as a derogatory term for the army reserve, which was later hijacked for skirmish players.
