ward eight

Ward Eight was used [to refer to someone acting crazy] in Northern New South Wales (particularly Lismore) as this was the ward number of the Richmond Clinic or psychiatric unit at Lismore Base Hospital. Compare ward twenty.

Contributor's comments: I grew up near Lismore, and we used to say "Richmond Clinic", not ward eight. You might say "Crazy as anything, they've taken him for a one way trip to Richmond Clinic".

Contributor's comments: In Melbourne in the 1960s, hte equivalent was "Mont Park", the suburb where the "Loony bin" was located.
