Lizzie

The word Lizzie was a generic reference to the family car, regardless of make, age, colour, etc. My mother who was raised in Newcastle then lived in Riverina area of NSW always called the family car Lizzie when referring to it: Lizzie ran out of petrol on the way home today.

Contributor's comments: My understanding from my dad is that this term originally comes from a shortening of Queen Elizabeth, although I'm not sure why!

Contributor's comments: This obviously derives from US slang 'tin lizzie' for a Model T Ford. A website on the subject says, 'Known for its dependability, the Model T Ford was soon nicknamed the 'Tin Lizzie' ('Lizzie' was a contemporary slang word used to describe a reliable servant).'
