deep sewerage

In Perth: sewerage system built by local councils in partnership with the State Government. Being connected to the deep sewerage was quite an event, because it meant (a) no longer did the big smelly tank truck come every so often to pump out your septic tanks; and (b) much of the back yard was excavated (which was especially interesting to children) because the deep sewerage pipes inevitably ran along the back boundary of your backyard. It was called deep sewerage because the effluent was thought to lie much deeper than sewerage in septic tanks: "Our backyard is ripped up cos we're being connected to the deep sewerage," said little Mark proudly to his schoolyard mates.

Contributor's comments: I have heard this word before, albeit in quite a different context! When you say someone is in "deep sewerage" in Tassie, it is a synonym for saying they are in "deep s**t"!
