dip tin

A cube shaped metal container without a lid, which has holes on all its sides. Grapes to be used for drying are picked and placed into these. Stacks of the dip tins are submerged into a dip containing chemicals to break the bloom of the grapes: I get paid $15 per 100 dip tins of grapes I pick.

Contributor's comments: a rectangular galvanised steel bucket punched through with dozens of holes to allow grapes to be dipped into a drying solution. The grapes were picked into them by the pickers and they were then paid per 100 hundred dip tins they picked. The dip tins themselves have been superseded by plastic tubs but farmers (blockies) use them for everthing. My father uses them for tool storage, catching shrimps for fishbait, keeping yabbies alive before cooking and several other purposes: "The pickers in that row will need more dip tins soon."
